10 Tips for Diabetic Foot Care

Diabetic foot pain is serious, and if you don’t take care of the pain, it can leave you struggling to walk properly. You need to take care of your feet as a diabetic – even if you don’t experience any pain.

When you have diabetes, you’re at higher risk of:

  • Bunions
  • Blisters
  • Corns
  • Calluses
  • Ulcers

But, if you take a proactive approach, you’ll be able to stave off many of these foot conditions.

1. Follow Your Doctor’s Guidance

If there’s anything that you do properly, make sure it’s following the direction of your doctor. Your doctor will prescribe you medicine and a healthy routine that can keep your diabetes under control.

Not following the recommended diabetic foot pain treatment can lead to burning in the foot . Neuropathy, caused by the diabetes, is to blame for this condition. You don’t want to suffer nerve damage, so follow the advice of your doctor if you want to properly care for your feet.

2. Daily Inspections are a Must

How often do you inspect your feet? If you’re like me, you’re not inspecting them at all. Diabetics should be checking their feet daily. You’ll want to inspect your feet to see if you have any of the following issues:

  • Cracked skin
  • Dry skin
  • Sores
  • Discoloration

If you can’t see the bottom of your feet, there’s no harm in using a mirror. Do whatever is necessary to examine your feet daily for any of the issues outlined above.

3. Use Supportive Insoles

One of the best diabetic foot pain home remedies is also the simplest: use insoles. The insoles that you use are very important, and it’s these insoles that can add cushioning to your feet and prevent sores.

You’ll want to opt for thin insoles, as they work best for anyone with diabetes.

4. Purchase Shoes That Are Loose Fitting

A lot of the reasoning for diabetic foot pain is that a person’s feet will begin to swell. Swollen feet are why we recommend thin insoles, and it’s one of the main reasons you’ll want to purchase shoes that are loose fitting.

Feet swell throughout the day, and for a diabetic, this swelling can be even worse.

And since you won’t be able to accurately judge the water temperature, you may suffer from:

  • Blisters

I recommend sticking your hands or elbow into the water first to gauge the temperature.

6. Always Wear Some Form of Footwear

Neuropathy is very serious, and you need to make several lifestyle changes if you’re now suffering from nerve damage. One of the changes that will help prevent diabetic foot pain is to always wear some form of footwear.

Yes, this may be uncomfortable and a burden, but there’s a reason you’ll need footwear.

Neuropathy sufferers will not be able to feel small cuts or objects entering their skin. Even when in the house, it’s just too easy to step on something and become injured.

Doctors recommend wearing footwear at all times, even in the home, to stave off the risks of infection or injury.

7. Make Sure to Visit the Podiatrist

I’m not one to go to the doctor’s office often, but when you have diabetes or an issue as serious as diabetes, it’s time to make some serious changes. Visiting a podiatrist is highly recommended because they will be able to keep your feet in good health.

A podiatrist will be able to offer:

  • Foot care specialization

A lot of people with diabetes will have a podiatrist on their team to take care of everything, from corns on their feet to bunions and calluses.

If you’re having foot problems, this is the first specialist that you’ll want to see.

8. Keep Your Feet Clean

Your feet need some extra love, and this means cleaning them more often. You’ll want to clean your feet daily, use warm water and make sure that you dry your feet very well. It’s important to dry the toenails and between the toes very well.

Once you’ve cleaned your feet properly, you’ll want to apply a thin coat of moisturizing skin lotion to the feet.

Keep this lotion away from between your toes, and instead, apply the lotion to the tops and bottoms of your feet. Lotion will help prevent cracking and will stave off calluses, too.

9. Choose the Right Socks


Moisture can lead to foot fungus, and this can lead to infections. You’ll want to choose the right type of socks that wick moisture away. These socks will do wonders for controlling athlete’s foot, too.

If you’re an athlete  or find that your feet sweat often, you’ll want to change your socks more often.

There’s no harm in changing your socks two or three times during the day if it’s a complete necessity.

10. Avoid Hard Impact Exercises

Diabetes can often be controlled with a strong diet and exercise plan. You’ll find that if you lose weight, you might reverse your diabetes – a lot of people have done it in the past. But, this doesn’t mean you want to engage in hard impact exercises just yet.

Avoid exercises and programs that include jumping.

Your feet don’t need the extra stress or swelling from these exercises. Instead, you’ll want to take a different approach. Opt for swimming or use the elliptical if you want to be able to burn fat and keep your exercise low impact at the same time.
